The “Sea Sparkle Collection” is an exploration of design, nature, and craftsmanship making its debut in Seoul, South Korea. The collection seamlessly combines porcelain and blown glass to represent the bioluminescent phenomenon known as Noctiluca Scintillans, or Sea Sparkle, which graces coastal shores worldwide— notably in the East Sea between Korea and Japan.

Drawing inspiration from this enchanting bioluminescent displays orchestrated by Noctiluca Scintillans, often referred to as "fire on water," the Sea Sparkle Collection weaves its narrative through the design, color palette, and materials chosen for these unique pieces.

The inclusion of porcelain in the collection serves to connect these creations to South Korea, where the pieces are produced, harkens back to the celebrated white porcelain craftsmanship that Korean artisans have been using for generations. Meticulously shaped porcelain elements emulate the appearance of dripping rocks, effortlessly blurring the lines between solidity and fluidity. This design approach conjures images of melting rocks, symbolically linking these pieces to the delicate ecosystems found along coastal shores.

Complementing the porcelain components are the blown glass elements, thoughtfully crafted to echo the rounded forms of Noctiluca Scintillans. Its frosted surface casts a soft, underwater glow, emulating the serenity of aquatic environments. These pieces feature subtle, intricate details reminiscent of the creature's delicate tentacles, inviting viewers to explore the beauty of sea sparkle through an abstract perspective.

The color palette of the Sea Sparkle Collection harmoniously blends shades of pink and blue, symbolising the dualistic nature of the phenomenon. Pink embodies the radiance, while blue captures the tranquil and aqueous aspects, staging a captivating interplay between fire and water, which lies at the heart of the sea sparkle's allure.

Unlike preview pieces that emphasised the potential toxicity of bioluminescent animals, the Sea Sparkle Collection adopts a gentler stance. It seeks to reflect the benign nature of Noctiluca Scintillans while highlighting the mesmerising play of light it generates, shifting the focus toward the captivating effect of light as its defining characteristic.

디자인, 자연, 장인정신에 대한 탐구를 담은 '씨 스파클 컬렉션'이 대한민국 서울에서 첫 선을 보입니다. 이 컬렉션은 도자기와 블로우 글라스를 완벽하게 결합하여 전 세계 해안가, 특히 한국과 일본 사이의 동해에서 볼 수 있는 생물 발광 현상인 녹틸루카 신틸란스로써, 다른 말로는 씨 스파클을 표현합니다.

‘물 위의 불’이라고도 불리는 녹조류의 매혹적인 생물 발광 현상에서 영감을 받은 디자인, 팔레트 색상의 소재를 통해 독특한 이야기를 엮어낸 씨 스파클 컬렉션을 만나보세요.

도자기는 컬렉션들이 생산되는 한국과 연결하는 역할을 하며, 한국 장인들이 수 세대에 걸쳐 사용해온 유명한 백자 장인 정신을 떠올리게 합니다. 세심한 모양의 도자기 요소는 물방울이 떨어지는 바위의 모습을 모방하여 견고함과 유동성 사이의 경계를 자연스럽게 모호하게 만듭니다. 이러한 디자인 접근 방식은 녹아내리는 바위의 이미지를 연상시키며, 해안가에서 볼 수 있는 섬세한 생태계를 상징적으로 연결합니다.

도자기 구성 요소로는 녹틸루카 신틸란의 둥근 형태를 반영해 세심하게 제작된 블로운 유리 그리고 생물의 섬세한 촉수를 연상시키는 미묘하고 복잡한 디테일이 특징이며, 추상적인 시각을 통해 바다 반짝이는 아름다움을 탐험하도록 초대합니다. 반투명 표면은 수중 환경의 평온함을 모방한 부드러운 수중 빛을 발산합니다.

Biography






Josep Plaja (Girona, 1996) is a contemporary designer based between Barcelona and Seoul and his work focuses on the study of glass and light through biomimicry. Inspired by bioluminescent animals from the seabed, Plaja combines an aesthetic focused on shapes, the rawness of materials and how they relate to each other.

His work centres on exploring the relationship between light and glass finding inspiration on bioluminescent creatures, using their natural radiance as a basis for his designs, which are represented in an abstract and evocative way. Moreover, his creative process emphasises the versatility of materials, allowing each collection and project to adapt to its concept and production environment. This approach not only deepens the connection between the artwork and its place of production, but also encourages new relations between glass and other fine materials– expanding new possibilities in the designs shapes and material connections, while remaining open to both traditional and innovative ways of production.


His pieces generate a dialogue between them and the viewer, whom they try to turn into their own prey; in the same way that bioluminescent animals use light to hunt their victims. The attraction generated by the light, in contraposition with the aggressiveness of the glass, represents a parallelism between these animals that are beautiful and fragile but poisonous and harmful at the same time, thus generating a reflexion about those toxic elements that attracts us only because of their beauty.

Josep Plaja (Girona, 1996)는 바르셀로나와 서울을 기반을 둔 현대 예술가이며 그의 작품은 생체 모방을 통한 유리와 빛 연구에 중점을 둡니다. 해저의 생물 발광동물에서 영감을 얻은 그는 형태와 재료의 원시성이 서로 어떻게 관련되어 있는지에 초점을 듭니다. 

그의 작업은 빛과 유리의 관계를 탐구하는 데 중점을 두며, 생물 발광 생물에서 영감을 얻어 자연광을 추상적이고 연상적인 방식으로 표현하는 디자인의 기초로 삼습니다. 또한, 그의 창작 과정은 재료의 다양성을 강조하여 각 컬렉션과 프로젝트가 컨셉과 제작 환경에 맞게 조정할 수 있도록 합니다. 이러한 접근 방식은 작품과 생산 장소 사이의 연결을 심화할 뿐만 아니라 유리와 다른 고급 재료 사이의 새로운 관계를 장려하여 디자인 형태와 재료 연결의 새로운 가능성을 확장하는 동시에 전통적이고 혁신적인 생산 방식 모두에 개방적입니다.

그의 작품은 작품과 관객을 연결 하며, 관객은 작품의 먹이로 변하려고합니다. 생물 발광 동물이 빛을 사용하여 먹이를 사냥하는 것과 같은 방식으로. 유리의 공격성과 대조적으로 빛에 의해 생성은 아름답고 연약하지만 동시에 유독하고 해로운 동물들 사이의 평행성을 나타내며, 따라서 아름다움 때문에 우리를 끌어들이는 독성에 대한 반사를 생성합니다.
