The "Medi Terraneum Collection” stems from an artistic residency carried out by the designer at the "Focus Foundation" in Ca n'Heras d'Adri, Girona, during the month of September 2022. During this period, Plaja thoroughly researched the bioluminescent animals of the Mediterranean Sea and explored materials while creating the first sketches. The designer collected stones from Cala Vigatà, a beach near the artist's residence, to use as molds and create the bases for the lamps/sculptures. Thus, these pieces acquire a geographical connection with their marine environment along with the glass structures inspired by bioluminescent animals of the Mediterranean.

The collection has been acclaimed since its first presentation at the Plataforma2 gallery. Although production of the first pieces ended in December 2022, the collection was completed in March 2023 due to the creation of new works commissioned for specific projects. The pieces are characterized by a finish that evokes the aesthetic properties of water, thanks to the refraction of glass and organic forms inspired by bioluminescent animals.

In addition to their unique individual beauty, Josep Plaja's pieces are designed to be displayed together, sharing a space that reflects the minimalist and organic aesthetic present in the marine ecosystem that inspires them.

Each work of "Medi Terraneum" is created with borosilicate glass, a material recognized for its durability and chemical and thermal resistance. This peculiarity is due to its composition, a mixture of elements similar to common glass but without the presence of lead. Borosilicate glass maintains its transparency and brightness, enhancing the quality and visual impact of each piece.

Inspired by the rawness of the materials and organic forms, his pieces generate a dialogue between them and the viewer, who try to become their own prey, just as bioluminescent animals use light to hunt their victims.

The magnetic attraction generated by the light, contrasted with the aggressiveness of the glass, reveals a parallelism between the beauty and toxicity present in these marine organisms. Plaja invites us to reflect on our fascination with toxic elements that captivate us only by their apparent beauty.

"Medi Terraneum 컬렉션"은 디자이너가 2022년 9월 한 달 동안 지로나의 카안헤라스 다드리에 위치한 "포커스 재단"에서 진행한 예술 레지던시에서 비롯되었습니다. 이 기간 동안 플라자는 지중해의 생물 발광 동물을 철저히 연구하고 재료를 탐구하면서 첫 번째 스케치를 만들었습니다. 디자이너는 작가 거주지 근처의 해변인 칼라 비가타에서 돌을 수집하여 몰드로 사용하고 램프/조각의 기초를 만들었습니다. 따라서 이 작품들은 지중해의 생물 발광 동물에서 영감을 받은 유리 구조물과 함께 해양 환경과 지리적 연관성을 갖게 됩니다.

이 컬렉션은 플라타포르마2 갤러리에서 처음 선보인 이후 호평을 받았습니다. 첫 번째 작품의 생산은 2022년 12월에 종료되었지만, 특정 프로젝트를 위해 의뢰된 새로운 작품의 제작으로 인해 컬렉션은 2023년 3월에 완성되었습니다. 이 작품들은 유리의 굴절과 생물 발광 동물에서 영감을 받은 유기적 형태 덕분에 물의 미적 특성을 연상시키는 마감 처리가 특징이며, 호셉 플라자의 작품들은 독특한 개별적인 아름다움 외에도 영감을 주는 해양 생태계에 존재하는 미니멀하고 유기적인 미학을 반영하는 공간을 공유하면서 함께 전시되도록 설계되었습니다.

"메디 테라네움"의 각 작품은 내구성과 내화학성 및 내열성을 인정받은 소재인 붕규산 유리로 제작되었습니다. 이 특성은 일반 유리와 유사하지만 납이 없는 원소가 혼합된 구성 때문입니다. 붕규산 유리는 투명성과 밝기를 유지하여 각 작품의 품질과 시각적 효과를 향상시키며, 재료의 날것과 유기적 형태에서 영감을 받은 그의 작품은 생체 발광 동물이 빛을 이용해 먹이를 사냥하는 것처럼 자신의 먹이가 되려고 하는 관객과 작품 사이에 대화를 유도합니다.

빛에 의해 생성되는 자기 인력은 유리의 공격성과 대조를 이루며 해양 생물에 존재하는 아름다움과 독성 사이의 평행성을 드러냅니다. 플라자는 겉으로 드러나는 아름다움에만 매료되는 독성 요소에 대한 우리의 매혹에 대해 생각해 보도록 우리를 초대합니다.

Biography






Josep Plaja (Girona, 1996) is a contemporary designer based between Barcelona and Seoul and his work focuses on the study of glass and light through biomimicry. Inspired by bioluminescent animals from the seabed, Plaja combines an aesthetic focused on shapes, the rawness of materials and how they relate to each other.

His work centres on exploring the relationship between light and glass finding inspiration on bioluminescent creatures, using their natural radiance as a basis for his designs, which are represented in an abstract and evocative way. Moreover, his creative process emphasises the versatility of materials, allowing each collection and project to adapt to its concept and production environment. This approach not only deepens the connection between the artwork and its place of production, but also encourages new relations between glass and other fine materials– expanding new possibilities in the designs shapes and material connections, while remaining open to both traditional and innovative ways of production.


His pieces generate a dialogue between them and the viewer, whom they try to turn into their own prey; in the same way that bioluminescent animals use light to hunt their victims. The attraction generated by the light, in contraposition with the aggressiveness of the glass, represents a parallelism between these animals that are beautiful and fragile but poisonous and harmful at the same time, thus generating a reflexion about those toxic elements that attracts us only because of their beauty.
